NAAMIC Workshop V: New Generation of NAFTA Standards

The 2008 Workshop addresses the need and potential for harmonizing agrifood standards by addressing the rapidly evolving issues of standards for food safety and border security. Public and private mechanisms are developing that have the potential for becoming significant barriers to trade and market integration under NAFTA. This is an issue that will need to be addressed under WTO.

A related issue that will be addressed involves mechanisms for reducing congestion at the borders given increased concern about the safety and security of the food supply and the need to further integrate markets to make NAFTA products more competitive within North America and with the rest of the world. In addition, consistent with the need to look at contemporary issues from the perspective of NAFTA as a whole and as an outgrowth of discussion in the Fourth Agrifood Market Integration Workshop, this Workshop will address the shifting comparative advantage of North American agriculture, with emphasis on livestock. In this regard, it will also briefly address the progress being made on efforts to model the North American agrifood economy as both an outlook forecasting tool and as a basis for assessing the impacts of changes in policy.
